Trip to Gura Raului
About Gura Raului
Gura Râului (German: Auendorf; Hungarian: Guraró) is a commune in Sibiu County, Transylvania, Romania, at the foothills of the Cindrel Mountains, 20 km west of the county capital Sibiu on the main road, in the “Mărginimea Sibiului” ethnographic area. It is composed of a single village, Gura Râului.
This is a very old village, inhabited before 1200s by shepards. They came here for the good grasslands and for the wealthy wood resources. Exploatation of these resources blessed them through time with a lot money. Locals are specialised in wood industry and in cheese delicacies.
Near Gura Raului you find the biggest lake in Sibiu County, which is actually the water reservoir for Sibiu. The river Cibin is banned, so has the lake appeared.
